Ethics Group Says Obama Cannot Distance Himself From Blagojevich

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following statement was released December 9 by Peter Flaherty, President of the National Legal and Policy Center:

"The Blagojevich arrest is a problem for Barack Obama for two reasons. First, Blagojevich's bagman Tony Rezko was Obama's political sponsor.

"Second, Blagojevich's intercepted comments speak volumes about the way political business is conducted in Illinois. Blagojevich certainly expected Obama to be a willing participant in the dealings over Obama's Senate seat. Of course, Obama is pleading ignorance, but he is either part of the political culture that produced Blagojevich or he is not. I doubt Rezko had one set of ethical standards when Obama was in the room, and another when he was with Blagojevich.

"The 76-page FBI affidavit alleging Blagojevich sought to silence critics at the Chicago Tribune and sell Barack Obama's Senate seat is shocking but not surprising. Corruption is endemic in Chicago and in Illinois state government. We may soon see two Illinois Governors in prison at the same time -- one Democrat and one Republican.

"I believe that the US Attorney acted now not only for the reasons he specified in his press conference, but also in the expectation that Obama might fire all U.S. Attorneys when he is inaugurated, like Bill Clinton did. Obama would be poorly advised to replace U.S. Attorneys who are conducting ongoing political corruption investigations.

"The cautionary tale here is that more government intervention in the economy guarantees increased corruption. Obama's plan to saturate state and local governments with stimulus funds will empower corrupt politicians and union bosses. Transactional politicians of the Blagojevich ilk will be the big beneficiaries. As we have documented in our newsletter Union Corruption Update, corrupt politicians and corrupt union bosses have a symbiotic relationship."

Statement by the Bipartisan Policy Center's (BPC) National Transportation Policy Project Regarding Economic Stimulus Bill

/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In response to the growing debate about a stimulus bill, the BPC's National Transportation Policy Project (NTPP) urges Congress to put Americans to work immediately on transportation investments that protect the nation's economic prosperity and competitiveness.

The likelihood that a major stimulus bill will be enacted early next year creates a unique opportunity to undertake a transportation infrastructure investment program that generates good secure jobs for American workers immediately and produces long-term growth for the nation's businesses. Transportation is essential in enabling economic activity and enhancing the productivity of businesses and workers. However, simply following historical funding approaches runs the risk of failing to use taxpayer funds wisely. Reform should accompany the stimulus effort because not all transportation investments are created equal. NTPP proposes the following guidelines for transportation stimulus funds:

-- Emphasize ready-to-go projects. Our surface transportation network
and facilities are in poor physical condition and suffer from poor
performance. With limited funds we must prioritize construction that
can be undertaken without delays and can put people to work as
promptly as possible. Experience has shown that projects that focus
on improving the operations of the existing transportation system are
often those that can be undertaken most quickly and can bring the
greatest returns, in terms of creating immediate construction and
other transportation jobs, and promoting longer-term economic growth.
-- Provide spending flexibility across all modes of transportation.
States and local authorities should have the flexibility and
discretion to invest in the transportation projects that bring the
greatest economic, environmental, and energy security returns in the
shortest possible time. Federal stimulus dollars should not be
constrained by current funding formulas that limit spending to one
form of transportation over another.
-- Hold states accountable for meeting stimulus goals. With flexibility
comes responsibility. States and localities that receive these
stimulus investments should use them to maximize near-term jobs and
long-term economic benefits. After the funds have been spent,
recipients should evaluate and report on how well the projects they
selected have achieved these goals. If the stimulus program is
extended to become part of a longer-term transportation funding
program, additional and more comprehensive performance and
accountability measures should be introduced.

The NTPP is a broad coalition of policy experts, business and civic leaders chaired by former Mayor of Detroit Dennis Archer, former New York Congressman Sherwood Boehlert, former Washington Senator Slade Gorton, and former Minnesota Congressman Martin Sabo. Its members are currently developing a long-term vision for the federal role in transportation policy, with a report due out early next year. NTPP is a project of the Bipartisan Policy Center.

About the Bipartisan Policy Center:

Former U.S. Senate Majority Leaders Baker, Daschle, Dole, and Mitchell formed the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) to develop and promote solutions that can attract the public support and political momentum to achieve real progress. The BPC acts as an incubator for policy efforts that engage top political figures, advocates, academics, and business leaders in the art of principled compromise. McCain - Senator Joe Lieberman On "Fox News Sunday"

"Look, the fact is that if Barack Obama's policy on Iraq had been implemented, Barack Obama couldn't go to Iraq today. It wouldn't be safe. Barack Obama, John McCain saw the same difficulty in Iraq. John McCain had the guts to argue against public opinion, to put his whole campaign on the line because as he says he'd rather lose an election than lose a war that he thinks is this important to the United States." -- Senator Joe Lieberman

Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT)
Fox News' "Fox News Sunday"
July 20, 2008

Senator Joe Lieberman: "Senator McCain and I and others want us out of Iraq sooner rather than later, but want us out in a way that does not compromise all the gains that American and Iraqi forces have made in Iraq, which Admiral Mullen spoke to. And frankly, we want to stay there to a victory because we don't want all those who have served in the American uniform there to have served, or in some cases died, in vain. Remember this Chris, we wouldn't be having this discussion about how to get out unless the surge, which John McCain courageously fought for taking on the president of his own party, popular opinion, risking his campaign, and which senator Obama opposed, worked. So that's the good news.

"I think everybody -- that is Prime Minister Maliki, President Bush, people like John McCain and I -- agree the sooner we are out the better. It has to be based on the conditions on the ground. Senator Obama doesn't seem to feel that way. It looked like he did a little bit after the primaries were over but then he was pushed by MoveOn.org and others on the anti-war left of the Democratic party back to a rigid timeline."

...

"The fact is that if Barack Obama's policy on Iraq had been implemented, Barack Obama couldn't go to Iraq today. It wouldn't be safe. Barack Obama, John McCain saw the same difficulty in Iraq. John McCain had the guts to argue against public opinion, to put his whole campaign on the line because as he says he'd rather lose an election than lose a war that he thinks is this important to the United States. The reason I say ... if Barack Obama's policy in Iraq had been implemented he couldn't be in Iraq today, is because he was prepared to accept retreat and defeat and that would mean today Al Qaeda would be in charge of parts of Iraq, Iranian-backed extremists would be in charge of other parts of Iraq. There'd be civil war and maybe even genocide. And the fact is that we are winning in Iraq today. And, you know, you can't choose, as Senator Obama seems to think, to lose in Iraq so you can win in Afghanistan. The reality is if we lost in Iraq, whi ch Obama was prepared to do, we -- we would go to Afghanistan as losers."

McCain - Statement on Barack Obama's Public Financing Announcement Today

U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released the following statement by Communications Director Jill Hazelbaker concerning Barack Obama's announcement that he will not participate in the public financing system:

"Today, Barack Obama has revealed himself to be just another typical politician who will do and say whatever is most expedient for Barack Obama.

"The true test of a candidate for President is whether he will stand on principle and keep his word to the American people. Barack Obama has failed that test today, and his reversal of his promise to participate in the public finance system undermines his call for a new type of politics.

"Barack Obama is now the first presidential candidate since Watergate to run a campaign entirely on private funds. This decision will have far-reaching and extraordinary consequences that will weaken and undermine the public financing system."

Interesting site that rates immigration stance for candidates

This is an interesting site we came across if illegal immigration and related issues are important to you. It's called "Americans for Better Immigration." They track the candidates and then grade them / rate them. Here's the intro from the site:

Americans for Better Immigration (ABI) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization which lobbies Congress for reductions in immigration numbers.

ABI believes the problem with immigration today is not the individual immigrant but the numbers. "Better" immigration is lower immigration.

By grading federal politicians on their immigration actions, ABI provides one of the essential tools for helping citizens demand the policy they want.

Making The Bush Tax Cuts Permanent. Governor Romney believes making the Bush Tax Cuts permanent is the first step to ensuring that Americans are able to keep more of their hard-earned money. Rolling Back Tax Rates Across The Board For All Americans. As President, Governor Romney will cut marginal tax rates across the board, allowing all Americans to save more money. This approach is fair, simple and extends the pro-growth benefits of tax rate cuts to all Americans. (Romney For President, "Strategy For A Stronger America: A Conservative Blueprint To Lower Taxes," Press Release, 10/4/07)

Making Middle Class Savings Tax Free. Governor Romney's plan will allow middle class Americans to save tax free by changing the tax rate on interest, capital gains and dividends to absolutely 0%. By helping more Americans save and invest, we can meet the challenges of an aging population and ensure the financial security of America. (Romney For President, "Strategy For A Stronger America: A Conservative Blueprint To Lower Taxes," Press Release, 10/4/07)

Killing The Death Tax. It is unfair to tax the American people three times: once when they earn their money; second when they invest it and receive income from those investments; and third when they die. (Romney For President, "Strategy For A Stronger America: A Conservative Blueprint To Lower Taxes," Press Release, 10/4/07)

Making Our Corporate Tax Rate Must Be Competitive With The Rest Of The World. The United States has the second highest corporate tax rate in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. We simply cannot afford for future economic growth to have a tax rate that is out of alignment with the other major economies of the world. (Romney For President, "Strategy For A Stronger America: A Conservative Blueprint To Lower Taxes," Press Release, 10/4/07)

Opposing Any Increase In Social Security Taxes. We can strengthen Social Security without resorting to higher Social Security taxes that will impact all Americans. Governor Romney will oppose any proposed increase in Social Security taxes. (Romney For President, "Strategy For A Stronger America: A Conservative Blueprint To Lower Taxes," Press Release, 10/4/07)

Making Qualified Medical Expenses Tax Deductible. Governor Romney supports the full deductibility of qualified medical expenses, which will allow Americans to deduct the cost of their health insurance and out-of-pocket medical expenses, where accompanied by at least catastrophic insurance. (Romney For President, "Strategy For A Stronger America: A Conservative Blueprint To Lower Taxes," Press Release, 10/4/07)

Preventing The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) From Hurting More American Families. At the very least, Congress must pass a patch to the AMT that will prevent this tax from affecting more and more families in America. (Romney For President, "Strategy For A Stronger America: Real Conservative Solutions," Press Release, 12/13/07)

Governor Romney Has Always Supported The Bush Tax Cuts:

Governor Romney Called The President's Tax Relief A "Powerful" Economic Tool. "Like Rhode Island, Massachusetts is heavily Democratic; John Kerry of the Bay State will sweep both places in November. I asked Romney how it helps Massachusetts that Bush is president. 'It helps America to have George Bush as president, and Massachusetts is part of America – still,' he chuckled. He said Bush, using the 'powerful' tool of a tax cut, has worked hard to stimulate the economy." (Charles Bakst, "Mitt Romney To Have His Moment In The GOP Spotlight," The Providence Journal, 8/31/04)

At The Republican National Convention, Governor Romney Praised Fiscally Conservative Government That "Leaves More Money In The Hands Of The Taxpayers." "We step forward by insisting on Ronald Reagan's vision of a compassionate and fiscally conservative government that promotes the opportunity of ownership and leaves more money in the hands of the taxpayers." (Governor Mitt Romney, Remarks At The Republican National Convention, New York City, NY, 9/1/04)

At A 2002 Fundraiser, President Bush Advocated Making The Tax Cuts Permanent Saying "I Know Romney Feels The Same Way." PRESIDENT BUSH: "They also need to make sure the tax cuts are permanent. Let me tell you my thoughts about tax relief. When your economy is kind of ooching along, it's important to let people have more of their own money. Here's the page out of the textbook that I believe is important. I know Romney feels the same way. If you let somebody keep more of their own money, they're likely to demand a good or a service. And when they demand a good or a service in this system, somebody is likely to produce that good or a service. And when somebody produces that good or a service, somebody is more likely to be able to find work." (President George W. Bush, Remarks At A Massachusetts Victory 2002 Reception, Boston, MA, 10/4/02)

Mitt Romney: President Bush Knows How To Stop Those Who Want To Raise Taxes. MITT ROMNEY: "We have to make sure that we have that battle cry here today as well because there are some people who would get the bus going back to 'Taxachusetts' and this man [President Bush] knows how to stop that kind of stuff." (Mitt Romney, Remarks At A Massachusetts Victory 2002 Reception, Boston, MA, 10/4/02)

Romney: "JUST SIMPLY LUDICROUS"

Secretary Of State Rice Comments On Gov. Huckabee's Attacks

No Laughing Matter: A serious look at Gov. Mike Huckabee's record and policy beyond the one-liners.

Gov. Mike Huckabee: "And the ultimate thing is, I may not be the expert that some people are on foreign policy, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night." (WABC Radio's "Imus In The Morning," 12/4/07)

National Review: "The Holiday Inn Express Candidate." "In sum, conservatives should have worries about the depth and soundness of Mike Huckabee’s foreign-policy views. And staying at a Holiday Inn Express is not going to be enough to allay them." (Editorial, "The Holiday Inn Express Candidate," National Review, 12/10/07)

"The idea that this is a go-it-alone policy is just simply ludicrous. And one would only have to be not observing the facts, let me say that, to say that this is now a go-it-alone foreign policy." – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

ABC News"Rice: Huckabee Foreign Policy Criticism 'Ludicrous'"Jonathan Karl December 21, 2007

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Friday said criticism of Bush administration foreign policy by Republican presidential candidate former Gov. Mike Huckabee was "simply ludicrous."

After first saying "I don't have time to comment on other people's comments", Rice took on Huckabee, head-on during an end-of-year State Department press briefing.
"The idea that this is a go-it-alone policy is just simply ludicrous. And one would only have to be not observing the facts, let me say that, to say that this is now a go-it-alone foreign policy," Rice said.
